To Whenua Gardens lies just seven kilometres from Taumarunui, nestled above the Whanganui River in the heart of New Zealand’s Forgotten World. Created by Elle and John Anderson since purchasing the property in 2016, the gardens enjoy sweeping views across surrounding farmland to the river and bush-clad hills beyond.
Unlike many established gardens, To Whenua has evolved through years of careful restoration. Years of thoughtful work have transformed neglected garden spaces into a series of intimate outdoor rooms, each with its own character while remaining closely connected to the surrounding landscape.
Native and exotic plants grow side by side throughout the gardens. Tree ferns, hydrangeas, rhododendrons and woodland plantings create changing displays through the seasons, while quiet paths lead visitors through secluded spaces including a bog garden, hosta garden and streamside walks.
The Whanganui River is never far away. Views across the valley and the sound of flowing water create a peaceful backdrop that gives To Whenua its unmistakable sense of place.
The name “To Whenua”comes from the Māori and means “return to the land”—a fitting reflection of the careful restoration that continues to shape both the gardens and the wider property.
