Restoring Nature

We contribute positively to both environmental protection and regeneration activities in our immediate surrounds.

We’re committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

As a bespoke luxury retreat set amidst New Zealand’s Forgotten World, we are deeply committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Sustainability informs every aspect of our operations, from environmental care to supporting the local Ruapehu community and enhancing guest wellbeing..

Wherever you’re travelling from, wherever you’re heading… The Gardener’s Folly welcomes you home.

A place of warmth, peace, and restoration.

Managing energy & resources

We actively seek to identify, measure, and reduce our energy & resource consumption and the resulting environmental impact – including energy usage, fuel consumption, water usage, and emissions.

  • Solar power and battery storage
  • Energy-efficient heating/cooling
  • Double glazing and thermal insulation
  • Natural spring water supply
  • Natural fibres and NZ wool furnishings

Waste management & pollution

We aim to minimise waste and pollution through thoughtful reuse, composting, recycling, and regenerative garden practices.

  • Recycling paper, glass and plastic
  • Excess produce shared locally
  • Composting food and garden waste
  • Mulching branches and garden trimmings
  • Reusing  our shorn sheep dags as mulch
  • Our sheep wool is crafted into guest blankets

Restoring nature

  • Native trees and shrubs are planted throughout the grounds
  • Naturally occurring native seedlings are replanted across the property
  • Bird and bee-attracting species are prioritised
  • Over 2,000 daffodils provide winter food for bees
  • Guest-room flowers are grown on-site
  • Former paddocks are being revegetated with native plants

Nature restoration at The Gardener’s Folly is ongoing, seasonal, and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.

Such a beautiful spot for us to relax in…

“My wife and I stayed here for two nights in January to ride a part of the timber trail. Such a beautiful spot for us to relax in, gorgeous gardens to stroll through and admire, and Chris and Scott were delightful hosts. Would gladly stay again in the future!”
