The Omaka Gardens

Set on more than 10 acres in New Zealand’s Forgotten World, The Gardener’s Folly is home to The Omaka Gardens, beautifully landscaped and featured in NZ House & Garden magazine.

A taste of what to expect

More than fifty mature Liquidambar trees line the 300-metre-long sealed driveway.

The gardens unfold into a series of distinct areas, including The Champagne Lawn, The Dell, The Woodland Garden, The Secret Garden, and The Second Husband’s Garden (find out why this is so named when you visit!).

There are many more unnamed corners to discover, each with its own unique character.

Your hosts welcome you to a stay to remember at The Gardener’s Folly, a tranquil oasis amidst New Zealand’s Forgotten World®.

Year-round colour

Mature trees frame The Omaka Gardens, creating a sense of structure and calm throughout the seasons.

Layered planting brings continual colour and texture, with rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas and maples setting the tone.  In the courtyard, a striking golden Gleditsia takes centre stage, while nearby stands the garden’s oldest tree – a 70-year-old Kalmia, carefully transplanted from the site of the original farmhouse.

Across the garden, richly planted beds and carefully shaped forms – spirals, pillars and soft cloud-like silhouettes – create a sense of quiet artistry and enduring beauty.

Explorers welcome

As a guest of The Gardener’s Folly, you are invited to wander and explore The Omaka Gardens at your leisure.
